When comparing Direct-to-Film (DTF) and sublimation printing for longevity, several factors play a role. These include the type of fabric used, the washing methods for the garment, and the printing process itself. Here’s how DTF and sublimation stack up in terms of longevity:
1. Fabric Compatibility and Durability
DTF Printing: DTF is highly versatile and can be applied to a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, nylon, and blends. Because of the adhesive powder used in DTF, the design adheres securely to the fabric’s surface, making it resistant to fading and peeling over time.
Sublimation Printing:Â Sublimation bonds best with polyester fabrics or items with a polyester coating, as the ink infuses directly into the fibers. This results in a longer-lasting, more durable design but is limited to synthetic materials.
2. Wash and Fade Resistance
DTF: With proper care, DTF prints can withstand multiple wash cycles, maintaining their color and detail. DTF prints typically last for 40–50 washes before noticeable fading might occur, although this can vary depending on the washing method and fabric type.
Sublimation:Â Since sublimation dyes the fibers themselves, it generally lasts longer on polyester fabrics and doesn’t peel or crack. Sublimated prints can last up to 100 washes or more without significant fading, as long as they are washed in cool water and dried on low heat.
3. Print Feel and Texture Over Time
DTF:Â DTF prints sit on top of the fabric, which can give them a slightly thicker feel initially. However, DTF’s use of adhesive powder provides a strong bond, meaning that over time. DTF prints maintain their shape and integrity with less risk of cracking.
Sublimation:Â Sublimation prints are smooth and soft because the ink becomes part of the fabric. This also means there is no risk of cracking or peeling with sublimation, as the design is permanently bonded into the fibers.
If longevity on polyester fabric is the main concern, sublimation printing usually lasts longer. This is because it embeds the design into the fabric. However, when printing on cotton or other materials, DTF offers similar durability. It provides a lasting design with proper care.
